8 HAZARDOUS MISTAKES WE MAKE AT HOME.

Prioritizing the safety of our living environment cannot be overemphasized. With or without kids around your home, there are certain things you should put in place and certain things you should not do to avoid home hazards or accidents.

Eight(8) dangerous mistakes we make at home that need to be avoided or addressed.

  1. Absence of a first aid box in the home. Asides from food, clothing, shelter, good water source, a first box should be made available in the house in case of a fall, an injury, or illness.

  2. Absence of a fire extinguisher. Nobody prays for a fire outbreak, but we must keep a fire extinguisher at home peradventure, something happens.

  3. Allowing children into the kitchen. Not to let your children into the kitchen, except you are sure that they can handle certain kitchen appliances, would best precaution method. Children learn from what you do. On a good day, when they know or notice that you aren't conscious of where they are, they can go into the kitchen and try to light the gas or plug an electric appliance into the wall.

  4. Plugging of appliances when they are not in use. Most people make the mistake of not unplugging an appliance after using it. A very high current can cause the appliance to explode, leading to the burning of the house and people.

  5. Neglect of leakages from appliances that use gas, coal, or oil. Lack of regular maintenance on appliances such as water heater, HVAC systems, amongst others that make use of gas, coal, or oil, can result in leakage of carbon monoxide, choking an entire family to death while they sleep.

  6. The careless dropping of electrical cords. With children around the house, one has to be over careful about how and where we drop electrical cords. Carelessly keeping them within reach of the kids can lead to electrocution when they try to plug it into a source of light. Sometimes, they can try to strangle themselves or their siblings while playing or fighting. We should try to drop electrical cords in a safe place, far from the reach of kids.

  7. Not cleaning the refrigerator regularly. Not cleaning the fridge might not sound like a hazardous mistake, but it is. Not cleaning your fridge can cause harmful bacteria to grow around your dishes, leading to food poisoning.

  8. Neglecting crack on the walls. Most people do not check their houses from time to time for wall cracks. When they do, they sometimes neglect it saying 'it's just a small crack.' They forget that the little cracks can gradually turn into a big break, and if not noticed early, it can cause the house to fall. And this can lead to the loss of lives and property. Ensure you inspect your house regularly; it will save you the risk of a cracked wall.

A conscious effort to observe and avoid the eight mistakes above will help save us the stress of accidents resulting from their neglect.
